The generic name of zyprazol is omeprazole . Zyprazol is an anti ulcer agent, under the class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It is classified as a gastrointestinal drug as it prevents the secretion of acid into the stomach. Therefore it prevents and heals stomach ulcers which occur as a result of excessive acid secretion. It comes as 20mg capsules ( a pack contains two cards each having 7 capsules).
In adults– it is used in the treatment of duodenal ulcer, long term management of reflux oesophagitis (an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus which causes burning sensations of the upper abdomen) and zollinger- Ellison syndrome(the development of tumors that secrete gastrin which stimulate acid secretion in the stomach , mostly in the pancreas or duodenum) , symptomatic relief of heart burn in patients with gastroesophagal reflux disease, H.pylori positive duodenal ulcer and NSAID associated gastric duodenal ulcer. It is mostly used in combination with antibiotics in the treatment of H.pylori implicated ulcers.
In children it is used in the short term treatment of severe ulcerative reflux oesophagitis resistant to previous medical treatment.
Generally 10mg is used for children (10-20kg) and also in adults for the prevention of relapse of duodenal ulcer.
20mg taken for cases of duodenal ulcer for (2-4 weeks), gastric ulcer with reflux oesophagitis for ( 4-8 weeks) , NSAID associated gastroduodenal lesions.
Zyprazol is associated with good patient adherence since it is taken as a once daily dosage regimen, also it has established effect against most types of ulcer including Helicobacter pylori implicated ulcers , fast and complete abortion in about 3-6 hours having about 70% bioavailability on repeated administration.
